My Personal Collection: The Silk Road

This teapot "Silk Road" showcases the most challenging technique in the realm of purple clay pottery known as "twisted clay." Similar to molding clay, it requires skillfully blending various colors of clay together. The mixture is then subjected to high-temperature firing in a kiln, resulting in the creation of this exceptional teapot.

Unlike typical twisted clay creations, which can only achieve abstract concepts like clouds, this teapot reaches an elevated level in the form of art. What sets it apart is the ability to express the artist's exceptional skills through painting. The interior and exterior of the twisted clay are consistent, with the outer surface resembling a painting while the inside reflects the same artwork.

The master behind this twisted clay creation is Tan Junxiang, a name that needs no registered titles. Hailing from a family with the topmost university president in China and the most successful businessperson in the industry, he simply finds solace in dedicating over 50 years of his life to perfecting this craft.

From mastering the art of painting to refining clay materials and controlling shrinkage ratios, every aspect of the teapot's production, including the construction of the kiln, is solely undertaken by Tan Junxiang. No existing kiln could meet his exacting standards, exemplifying his relentless pursuit of perfection inspired by the profound love for purple clay teapots passed down through generations. Although I yearn to be his apprentice, he has never taken on any students, making this exquisite artistry a dwindling treasure that may never be mastered again in the future.
